"Vintage" ballroom dancing to great live music at the Sunday afternoon Ragtime-Era Tea Dances. Waltz, tango, foxtrot, one-step, blues, two-step, Charleston, early swing, maxixe and half-and-half are among the couple dances we enjoy at the "Tea Dances".

Live music by the Mont Alto Ragtime and Tango Orchestra with vocalist Susan Rogers, or Susan Rogers' Exuberant Quartet, and occasionally other great local bands.

No prior dance experience required. No partner needed. Second Sunday of the month, September through May (no summer dances).

Description

Joe Smith and the Spicy Pickles Jazz Band is a Denver-based vintage jazz band dedicated to swing music and dance. This small group style swing band packs a punch of power, personality, and wit into each show, intriguing generations new and old with the beloved charm of big band swing from the late 30’s and early 40’s. The Pickles bring it all – high energy, quality musicianship, and an authentic big band sound and look that celebrate the unique American spirit of swing. The band fuses musical influences from the sounds of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw with the showmanship of Louis Armstrong, Lucky Millinder, and Jimmy Lunceford. With a smart respect for the preservation of vintage jazz music and entertainment, the Pickles are constantly adding new and original tunes to their repertoire. They bring a unique visual flair to each performance with gimmicks, tricks, horn movements, and hat work inspired to captivate audiences all night long.

Please join us for what will not doubt be a remarkable evening!

Description

This is a full-on big band lead by “Sticks” Wilson on the trap set. Classic, energetic, steady and powerful right through the end of the night. All the classics from the Big-Band-Era and a clean, driving sound.

Deborah Stafford is excellent with vocal emanations that rouse and satisfy. Expect some cross-over from other dance circles, and do the Shim-Sham with Tuxedo Junction in the second set.

This is a band you can depend upon for great music for swing dancing. They have been playing the Dickens Opera House, and have begun other interesting shows along the Front Range.

A most favored swing orchestra at the Avalon Ballroom. I’m excited about this next appearance of this orchestra on the big Avalon stage, with our grand piano and excellent audio. Please join us!
